Generate a QSM

Hi,

I am a researcher at Wageningen University in the horticulture and product physiology group. My project involves developing an FSPM of dwarf tomato plants. I am looking for a way to reconstruct the topology of plant architecture from a tomato plant without leaves.



I understood that it should be possible to generate a QSM from a point cloud SimpleForest. I also read from some papers that SimpleTree is able to do the same. 

The installation process of SimpleForest on Windows is quite complex for me, so before starting it I would like to understand if it is the right tool for my problem.

Question 1: Where can I download SimpleTree?

Question 2: Can I generate a QSM from a pointcloud using SimpleForest or SimpleTree?

Hello Michele,

1) In this preprint:

you find a list of download links including a download link for the SimpleForest software. As long as you have a windows system, you should be hopefully able to use this.

2) You can build QSMs yes. But I expect not very accurate volume results for Tomato plants. TLS point clouds are from sensors with a footprint size of ~1 cm and I expect Tomato plants structure to have similar order of diameter. Also for trees the tips are overestimated. The thing is, SimpleForest can improve the tips statistically by extrapolating allometric relations from the major branching structure. In the major branching structure I can fit the allometry and extrapolate to the thin branching strucutre. But in tomotoe plants there is no major branching structure so there is not good part of the plant where you can fit the functions into. If you are interested in volume of the plants I think you will need to get your own destrucive volume measurements to compare to.
